Am J Clin Nutr: effects of resveratrol on cerebral blood flow variables and cognitive performance in humans: a double- blind, placebo-controlled, crossover investigation
Alternative Medicine Review, June, 2010 by D.O. Kennedy, E.L. Wightman, J.L. Reay
BACKGROUND: The many putative beneficial effects of the polyphenol resveratrol include an ability to bolster endogenous antioxidant defenses, modulate nitric oxide synthesis, and promote vasodilation, which thereby improves blood flow. Resveratrol may therefore modulate aspects of brain function in humans. OBJECTIVE: The current study assessed the effects of oral resveratrol on cognitive performance and localized cerebral blood flow variables in healthy human adults. DESIGN: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study, 22 healthy adults received placebo and 2 doses (250 and 500 mg) of trans-resveratrol in counterbalanced order on separate days. After a 45-min resting absorption period, the participants performed a selection of cognitive tasks that activate the frontal cortex for an additional 36 min. Cerebral blood flow and hemodynamics, as indexed by concentration changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin, were assessed in the frontal cortex throughout the posttreatment period with the use of near-infrared spectroscopy. The presence of resveratrol and its conjugates in plasma was confirmed by HPLC after the same doses in a separate cohort (n=9). RESULTS: Resveratrol administration resulted in dose-dependent increases in cerebral blood flow during task performance, as indexed by total concentrations of hemoglobin

ITOO was appalled to see the stricken face of Rahotu's Deanne Ball staring at me from the front page of Saturday's Taranaki Daily News.
Appalled not at the reported wall of silence protecting a man who allegedly attacked the 38-year old woman, rather over the mentality that has Gen-Xers telling on each other on the front page of the paper, over alcohol- fuelled incidents better left in the gutter.
My sympathy lies with the Okato policeman who is being asked to waste his precious time over toddlerish behaviour from drunken grown- ups.
You don't even have to read between the lines of the story to comprehend Ms Ball's attempts to elicit sympathy from the wider community, even as her own community closes ranks and draws away from her, ". . . if a male is hitting a chick you would help out, wouldn't you!"
Yet in the next sentence she confesses to "lunging and kicking" with a "kick that connected between the man's legs". A statement strongly contradicting that she was attacked without provocation.
Women have fought for years to gain equal rights, so why does Ms Ball think she can lash out then hide behind her gender and cry foul? It's not only that men shouldn't hit women - no-one should be hitting anyone! But sometimes, when you mess with the bull . . . you get the horn!
I read Deanne's front-page appearance as a misdirected cry for help.
The story reeks of bad behaviour escalated by too much alcohol, and you do not have to read far into the Taranaki Daily News to find numerous examples of drunken people falling foul of the law (Operation Sabretooth caught 28 Taranaki people driving with excess breath alcohol last weekend). Take alcohol out of the equation and many of our communities' problems miraculously disappear.
As a child of the 60s (now middle-aged), I look back on the binge- drinking mentality that pervaded my youth and cringe

DANNII Minogue says she takes a picture of herself before she heads out for a big event - to avoid wardrobe malfunctions.
The Australian X Factor judge, 38, said: "I always take a photo of myself before I leave home, just to make sure the outfit I'm wearing isn't see-through.
"I also check my look from all angles because you never know which angle a camera flash is going to come from."
In another tip Dannii said she has loops sewn into her dresses to hold her bra straps in place and keep them hidden.
The new mum shared her style tips on ITV.com to promote her new fly-onthe-wall documentary.
Currently in Melbourne with new baby Ethan, Dannii also said a hat was essential on long-haul flights. She said: "Bad hair days are sad but true. But that's where hats come in

Care about effective
Care about effective cost-management
If staff are complacent about financial performance and cost control, there is little chance that a cost-saving project will succeed. Executives must find the time to take an interest in reviewing expenses and reducing costs, and staff generally mould their behaviour to match that of their leadership.
2. Cost-cutting should not be allowed to become 'flavour of the month'
Remain motivated to keep costs in check on a regular basis. If a cost-management 'culture' is not established, employees will quickly allow your 'push' to fade away. It's important to instigate measurable strategies for cost reduction.
3. Over-confidence can be a killer
Companies which assume that their costs are under control based on historical trends, or that their market knowledge is watertight, run the risk of overspending through arrogance. You know what you're paying, but do you know what your competitors pay for the same products? Never assume that you know the market as well as your suppliers - and never assume that they're doing you the best deal possible.
Compare your cost-management performance to others in your industry and region.

You also need to constantly reevaluate your
You also need to constantly reevaluate your time in the face of changing priorities. Give yourself the cushion for this.
Analyze Regularly: Keep track of how you spend your time, and analyze its level of productivity; look at whether each activity is moving you closer to your goals or is not. Try doing this for a period of two weeks; you?ll be amazed to realize how much time we spend on non-productive things. Just the sheer act of tracking this will make you more productive, guaranteed.
Apply ?Zero-Based Thinking?: Author and speaker Brian Tracy, in his book ?Focal Point? talks about applying ?Zero-Based Thinking? as a way to form your goals and mission. It applies at this level as well. As you get a sense of where you?re time is currently spent, ask yourself these questions:
- What things do I need to start doing?
- What am I currently doing that I need to do more of?
- What am I currently doing that I need to stop doing?
What things can you delegate? What things could you stop doing that aren?t really necessary? (Think hard on this one; there are certainly things we all do that don?t really need to be done at all.)
Take time for reflection and planning: ?But wait?, you say! ?I don?t have time to do stuff now, how can I take all this time for planning.

Got baggage?
UPS can deal with it
Only days after federal officials announced that the nation's airlines had collected 33 percent more revenue this year from checked luggage fees, UPS offered its alternative to the hassle and expense of lugging a suitcase through an airport.
The world's largest package delivery service recently announced that it was selling specially designed boxes that resemble suitcases. Passengers can ship the "luggage boxes" to their final destination to avoid the airlines' check-in lines and luggage fees.
The new UPS boxes include carrying handles and come in two sizes.
The new luggage boxes also are hitting the market as demand for airline seats begins to rebound from a two-year slump.
Another advantage to the UPS luggage box: A tracking number lets passengers know its exact location. That's something airlines don't offer.
Airline peanut
ban hits snag
Peanut growers protested last month when the Transportation Department asked the public to comment on proposals to protect airline passengers with peanut allergies.
The agency offered three alternatives: Ban peanuts on all commercial flights, create a peanut-free zone around allergic passengers who notify airlines before boarding or do nothing.
Now it's unclear whether it is moving ahead with any peanut restrictions.
Two weeks after asking for public comment, the Transportation Department issued a clarification. It pointed out that federal law forbids it from adopting any peanut restrictions without producing a scientific study that shows airborne peanut particles can harm allergic passengers.
New cocktails on Continental Airlines
Continental Airlines, the world's fifth-largest airline, unveiled several specialty beverages for in-flight sale recently, including mojitos, pomegranate martinis and Red Bull energy drinks.
The mojito is served with Bacardi Light rum for $9. The pomegranate martini is mixed with Skyy vodka for $9 and Red Bull - an energy drink laced with caffeine - is offered for $3 straight or combined with Skyy vodka for $9.
A list of in-flight drink choices is posted on Continental's website - the same website that offers the following healthful travel tips for long-haul passengers: "Eat light meals during your flight. Also, avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol."

During the summer, get into
During the summer, get into the habit of applying a high SPF suncreen regularly.
Reapply sunscreen before and after swimming, and remember that ultraviolent rays can reach you on cloudy days and while you are in the shade.
Between 11am and 3pm take extra care and stay inside or within the shade to avoid the strongest sun of the day.
Spritz your face regularly throughout the day.
Choose loose, cotton, silk or linen clothing which allow perspiration to evaporate naturally.
Wear a floppy hat to keep the heath off your head.
Finish off the day with a liberal application of aftersun cream - soothing aloe vera is most effective.
